Keeping your team motivated is no easy task, but it’s absolutely necessary for the well-being of your company. You need them to be innovative, hardworking, engaged and efficient. When they feel like valuable members of the team, they’re more likely to give it their all and go above and beyond to make sure your whole company is successful. Here are five tips to motivate your team so they’ll consistently perform at high levels.
Plan team-building activities
Team-building activities are a great way to teach your employees how to work together towards a common goal. Not only do these activities get everyone out of the office to tackle something fun and exciting, it also encourages people to get to know each other better. Plus, you can get them to develop their communication, problem-solving and leadership skills better.
Showing your support for your team is really important to making sure they feel valued and trusted, and you can do so in many ways. You can make sure they have the right up-to-date equipment, information and technology they need to get the job done. You can also go to bat for them when they’re up for a raise or promotion—as long as it’s warranted, of course—and check in with them regularly to make sure they’re on track and have the tools they need to meet their goals.
Allow for flexible perks
The desire to work remotely is becoming increasingly popular. Fortunately, it’s also becoming increasingly feasible, as technology applications and Wi-Fi abilities improve. So, if you can’t support them with this perk, they might drift over to a competing company that will provide that perk. If it seems like a concession, it’s not. People who work remotely are often more efficient, more productive, less stressed and more engaged. It’s also helps boost morale and reduces employee turnover. If your employees are happy with your arrangement, they’re less likely to leave.
Make things fun
This doesn’t mean you need to install a Ferris wheel and park an ice cream truck outside every afternoon. But it does help boost morale if your employees can break up their days with some fun activities. Think Ping-Pong table or pinball machine in the break room or occasional catered lunches. You just need somewhere for the employees to escape or something to look forward to when they’re feeling overwhelmed by the stresses of work.
It seems simple enough, but some managers need to be reminded that employees value small gestures of thanks. Commend them for reaching their goals or achieving a company milestone. It can be as simple as saying “thank you” or “good job.” And don’t forget to show thanks for their effort, even if a project failed or was a huge struggle. It goes a long way to recognize all the hard work someone put in.
