If you celebrate Christmas, do you remember when you were young and the anticipation of Christmas made the month of December seem like it lasted forever? Now contrast December as an adult. Now it feels like the month lasts for 24 hours! It’s like the Kenny Chesney songs says, “Trust me, friend, a hundred years goes faster than you think.”  We wake up on December 1st and 24 hours later we are celebrating New Years Day! But what we often neglect is ourselves and the strategic opportunities buried within all of our activities! This is a great month for strategy. Now is the time to lay the groundwork for hiring new employees or looking for a new role in 2019.

Keep Your Eyes and Ears Open

I think it’s safe to argue that December is the most social month of the year.  I saw a news headline recently, and I am paraphrasing, that the average person puts on six pounds of weight between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.  Am I surprised? Nope. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, there are so many events we attend due to work, friends, and family that our caloric self-control is tested daily! But while we are grazing, we need to remember to keep our eyes and ears open to the strategic opportunities and people around us. Every time you are meeting a new person at an event, it is possible you are meeting a new potential client, employer or networking source.  Take advantage of the social nature of this month and start building new connections for 2019!

Lay the Groundwork For 2019

In today’s job market, I anticipate there will continue to be many businesses who are willing to hire throughout December. However, you may be in a situation where you have vacations, bonuses, or obligations that make it impractical for you to leave your current position this month. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t start quietly and confidentially letting people know you may be open to change in 2019. This is a great time of the year to be having as many conversations as possible, both internally and externally, as you evaluate your options for next year.

Don’t Go Overboard

While December is a great month to have conversations and meet new people, it is also important to remember not to be overly aggressive. Plant seeds in your conversations, ask to follow up with the person you are chatting with at a more appropriate time.  Be respectful of the time and place you are at with that person and don’t scare them off.   It’s a fine line that you walk, but if you are going to err, I would argue that you err on the side of caution. A bad first impression is difficult to overcome.

As we enter the final stages of 2018 many people are already checking out mentally for the year. Be different, be strategic, and be smart.
