We all make mistakes at work. It happens. And as long as they’re small and don’t happen too frequently, everyone forgives us and we get back to work. Bosses like employees who are meticulous and proactive—it limits stress for them and makes them feel they can trust you with bigger tasks. Here’s how you can become more detail-oriented at work.

Understand Your Role

Make sure you know exactly what’s expected of your position. If you’re constantly handing off assignments that aren’t completed because you didn’t know their fine-tuning was your responsibility, you’re going to be quite the nuisance to some boss or colleague who has to fix all your mistakes. Or maybe you’re taking on more than you’re supposed to, meaning that you’re not able to allocate the right amount of time to your other more urgent tasks. Knowing the intricacies of your responsibilities helps you complete tasks more thoroughly and get along with your colleagues.

Organize Yourself

Figure out what your organization weaknesses are. If you’re always late or missing appointments, you might solve that problem with a calendar and setting electronic reminders. You have to be able to discern what task is most important, what’s urgent, and how you can accomplish both by the end of the day. At the start of each day, prioritize your tasks, budget your time, and stick to the schedule you set for yourself. Yes, unexpected issues will pop up that you’ll have to tend to, but do your best to stay regimented.

Check and Double Check

At the end of every day and every assignment, check over your work. Look for mistakes and things you’ve missed, and engage the help of others to look for errors you didn’t catch yourself. Remember that anything you turn in reflects on your skills and abilities, so make sure each assignment is the best it could possibly be.
