Goal setting is one of those things that can easily be forgotten about. You’re so busy making sure your day-to-day tasks get completed that you don’t have time to sit down and think about the bigger picture. That’s why it’s essential to help your employees to carve out time to sit down and establish some goals. When done correctly, goals can energize your staff, focus them on the future, and allow them the opportunity to direct their careers. Here’s why you should help your employees set goals.

Goals provide clarity

By working with employees to write down their goals, you can ensure they’ll know exactly what they’re aiming towards and precisely what they need to do to get that done. Instead of aimlessly wandering into work and lounging at a desk where work may or may not pop up in front of them, their goals tell them what to focus on each day. If you can, break the long-term goals into mini, short-term goals with either weekly, monthly, or quarterly. When your employees seem to be wandering or are in between assignments, they can use the goals as a reference to remind them what to work on.

Goals are motivating

There’s no better feeling than accomplishing a goal and rewarding oneself! After all, that achievement is a result of a lot of hard work and focus. So if goals and their celebrations are what motivates your employees, keep setting them for them. And while extrinsic factors don’t inspire everyone, sometimes the act of making the work more meaningful helps engage employees in their work. Instead of simply setting arbitrary goals, get your employees to recognize how their efforts and individual goals impact the big picture and the company as a whole. That way, even when bonuses and other perks aren’t feasible, they can at least be satisfied that their work is significant.

Goals keep you focused

When athletes are training to run a marathon, they make a plan, so they know exactly what they need to do each day. They have a certain distance they need to run, and each week, they should run a little bit more until they hit that 26.2-mile mark. And then they celebrate! Work goals should be treated the same way. Runners can note their times and distances to see that they’re making progress. Sometimes, workdays can be demanding, and your employees will find themselves pulled in all different directions. But using the written goals as a guide, they can figure out what to prioritize. Some tasks are less important and can wait until next week, while others need to be handled immediately.

Help your employees track their short-term goals and progress toward the long-term objectives. Hold them accountable and offer feedback when needed. Collaboratively tracking progress gives you the chance to communicate regularly about their performance.
