Since early March, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced millions of businesses across the United States to temporarily close their doors. This has been a nationwide effort that’s had a considerable impact on our collective fight to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus. Almost four months later, those same businesses begin the slow, steady, and careful process of reopening.

Given the anxiety that’s permeated our society in recent months, it’s unsurprising that many working professionals are nervous about returning to their brick-and-mortar workplaces. After such an extended period of lockdown and living under quarantine conditions, the prospect of returning to work feels for many people like an extremely risky idea. And, of course, it is. But the fact of the matter is that employers can implement policies and strategies that can make the return to work a safe and minimally risky process for their teams. And to minimize feelings of anxiety in employees, it will be essential for employers to communicate as thoroughly and as often as possible with their employees about those policies.

In fact, we might even say that the best tactic that employers will have at their disposal in the coming months will be to overcommunicate. That is, to engage their employees in the conversation to the degree that everyone feels thoroughly confident and well-informed about what the return to work process will look like.

To drive that point home, here are three ways in which overcommunicating with your employees will make the process less nerve-wracking and more efficient for everyone involved:

  • It will ensure that everyone knows when and how the return to work process will take place. Every business will need to implement its own, unique return to work strategy. In light of that, make sure that all of your employees clearly understand the timeline and the logistics of the process that they will need to adhere to.
  • It will make it more likely that employees will maintain workplace safety measures. Will you require your employees to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in the workplace? What sort of social distancing measures will you be implementing? How will these policies be enforced in the workplace? These are all details that employees will need to be aware of before they begin the process of returning to work.
  • It will minimize anxiety amongst your employees. Finally, as we alluded to above, overcommunication will be essential to ensure that your team feels calm, cool, and collected during the return to work process. The last few months have given your employees plenty of reasons to feel nervous. You can provide them (as well as yourself) with a tremendous amount of peace of mind simply by making an effort to keep everyone in the loop and updated as much as possible. That means, first and foremost, that it will be essential to create a plan for what information will be communicated, how it will be passed along, and when those updates will need to be sent out.
